Pool barrier and fence codes typically require a barrier of a minimum height around the pool area, with no gaps or footholds a small child could climb, and a self-closing, self-latching gate that opens away from the pool. Exact numbers vary by jurisdiction, so the local building or health department is the authority to confirm … Read more
Layered pool safety means using several separate protections at once — barriers, alarms, covers, and lessons — because none of them is reliable on its own. The layer that actually prevents drowning is a designated adult watching the water. Everything else only reduces the chance a child reaches the water unnoticed; it does not replace … Read more
A pool usually turns green right after opening because algae grew in the water while the pool sat closed, often with little or no sanitizer working, and the moment sunlight and warmth return, that algae multiplies fast. It’s a chemistry and biology problem, not a sign anything is broken. What actually causes the green color? … Read more
A winter cover blocks sunlight, keeps out leaves and debris, and is built to sit on a closed pool for months, sometimes under snow or rain. A solar cover is a thin, light material meant to float on open water during swim season to slow evaporation and hold in some heat. They are not interchangeable, … Read more
No — a pool should not be fully drained for winter in almost all cases. Standard practice is to lower the water a few inches below the skimmer, not empty the pool. Full draining is reserved for specific repairs or very unusual site conditions, and doing it without knowing why can cause real structural damage. … Read more
An uncovered pool over winter collects leaves, dirt and organic matter that feed algae, loses sanitiser and balance faster from sunlight and rain, and leaves plumbing and equipment more exposed to freeze damage. The water usually turns cloudy or green, and reopening it in spring takes far more work and cost. Why does leaving a … Read more
Blowing out the lines pushes standing water out of the pool’s pipes so nothing is left inside to freeze. Water expands as it freezes, and pipe walls and fittings don’t flex enough to absorb that expansion. Skip this step in a freezing climate, and a pipe can crack somewhere it isn’t visible until spring. What … Read more
Winterising a pool means balancing the water chemistry, cleaning and lowering the water level if needed, protecting the pump, filter and any exposed pipework from freezing, and fitting a cover so the pool sits safely through cold weather until it’s reopened. It’s less about “shutting the pool down” and more about leaving the water and … Read more
Opening a pool for the season is a sequence, not a single task: removing the cover, clearing debris, restarting the pump and filter, testing and adjusting the water, and checking the equipment before anyone swims. It usually takes several days from uncovering the water to the pool actually being ready, not one afternoon. What actually … Read more
Most hot tub covers hold up well for a handful of years before the foam inside starts absorbing water and the vinyl skin cracks or delaminates. Exact lifespan depends on climate, sun exposure and how it’s treated day to day. It matters because a failing cover stops insulating, gets heavy and dangerous to lift, and … Read more
